Thirteen-year-old Vishnu Deo Memorial School Dux, Asenaca Morell, aims to keep her mum proud after she received her award at the school’s prizegiving ceremony on Wednesday.

Asenaca was raised by her mother, who works at the Fiji National University, ever since her father had left them when she was two-years-old.

“Ever since he left us, I had always used that to motivate me to work hard so I can provide the best for my mother in the future and that was a promise I made to myself,” she said.

“I would always see my mother cry for me whenever I receive my awards.”

Asenaca always aimed to get first place in academics since she was in Year Three.

Despite financial struggles her family faces, she is glad her school provides free lunch whenever she comes to school without food.

“I am proud to have a mother like her because she encourages me to work and study hard,” she said.

She lives with her mother, grandfather, uncle and two younger brothers in Raiwai.

The aspiring doctor had wished that her grandmother, who passed away this year, was alive to see her receive her awards.
