The Fiji Police team defended their ANZ Ratu Sukuna Bowl soccer title after securing a 2-2 draw against Army at Buckhurst Ground yesterday.

Police led 1-0 at halftime with Simone Tamanisau drawing first blood.  But Army came back composed and stronger in the second spell resulting in Epeli Saukuru equalizing.

With both teams tied 1-1, pressure began to build with fans cheering their side on.

Christopher Wasasala put Army in the lead with a beautiful goal from inside the box but it was Tamanisau’s experience which gave Police hope as he scored his second goal to equalise, ending the game 2-2.

Police coach Inosi Cava said they knew what to expect from Army but the main drive behind the team was to never give up.

“We knew it would be a tough game for us and that Army would come in well prepared this year,” Cava said.

“This was a different ball game compared to the past years; when Army scored their second goal I just told the boys to never lose hope.

“I told them they need to play until the last whistle and they pulled through.

“Tamanisau and some other senior players it really boosted the young players.

“This win is for all those policemen who are out in the station working and to all those who supported us.”

Meanwhile, Army coach Ratu Penaia Latianara is proud of what his team has achieved.

“First of all I would like to thank God and the boys,” Latianara said.

“The boys really played their hearts out and played until the last second so it was a good match against our brothers.

“We will go back and look at our game and improve from there and come back stronger next year.”
