Kalabu Primary School’s sports boy award recipient has been approached by many secondary schools.

Saiasi Waqa, 13, of Nadaro Village in Tailevu said he was approached by secondary schools in Suva, including Marist Brothers and Suva Grammar.

Saiasi was awarded the best sports boy during the school’s prizegiving on Wednesday.

He had won three bronze medals in the 4x100metres, 200metres and 400metres track events during the 2016 Chow Games.

“I was approached by six different schools after the Chow Games to play for them, but I refused because I have always wanted to go to Ratu Kadavulevu School since I was a child,” he said.

“It was important for me to stay near my family and also carry on with my passion for rugby and athletics.”

The sports girl award was presented to Mereia Buirokani, 14, of Vunisinu, Rewa.

She said her mother was an inspiration who loved sports and encouraged her to carry on with the family trend.

“My mother was a netball and athletics champion during her days in school and she has trained me since I was seven years old,” she said.

“I want to carry on with the trend to make her feel proud of me and I know I will perform even better when I go to secondary school.”

Mereia will join Adi Cakobau School while Saiasi will join Ratu Kadavulevu School in Tailevu next year.
