Every mother has the power to divide or unite the family, says Loi Mateiwai.

The woman from Wainika in Vanua Levu, and husband Vilimone Mateiwai, stood the proudest yesterday when they witnessed their daughters receiving prizes during the Christian Mission Fellowship Primary School prizegiving ceremony in Nasinu.

Her daughters, Year 7 student Loraini Mateiwai, and Year 5 student Kuini Mateiwai, received second prizes for their individual classes.

Mrs Mateiwai said it was an emotional day to see her daughters excelling in their academic years despite the difficulties they went through.

“I just had tears in my eyes. It was overwhelming, they have worked hard on it and they deserve it. My husband and I were excited to hear their names being called out, and I thank the Lord for his undivided love upon us,” Mrs Mateiwai said.

“I would like to thank the teachers and the families for their support.”

Despite the setbacks in life, she said a mother should stand up for her children and the family as a whole.

“I would like to advise parents and specifically mothers, you are the foundation of a family, try and have time with your children whilst they are still young and don’t delegate your responsibilities to others,” she said.

Loraini and Kuini, of Cautata Village in Tailevu, thanked their parents and teachers for their endless support.

Loraini said the journey so far was tough her and the younger sister, but through the guidance of the Almighty they managed to overcome all challenges and scooped second prizes in their individual classes.
