It was a special day for proud mum, Subhashni Devi, when her son took out top honours on Thursday during the Fiji School for the Blind prizegiving ceremony.

Originally from Rakiraki, Shartik Lal, 13, beat all and is going home with the best hostel student, most outstanding student, and highest mark for the Fiji Eighth Year Exam 2016 awards, among others.

“I travelled all the way from Rakiraki just to be here for this special ceremony and I’m so proud of him,” said an emotional Mrs Devi.

Shartik has lived in the hostel for the past four years and says he’ll miss all his friends and the teachers.

“We want to thank all the teachers and the management staff for all their tremendous support throughout,” she said.

Shartik will be heading to Penang Sangam School for secondary studies and aspires to become an artist.
