The top sportswoman for Makoi Muslim Primary School wants to join the Silver Ferns in the future.

Vitaeli Maleba, 12, of Vitara, Rakiraki said her grandmother was her inspiration.

She received the award during the school’s prizegiving on Wednesday.

“My grandmother was in a netball team and she played so well for many years,” the Year 7 student said.

“She has been my first coach for netball ever since I was four and because of her I am receiving this award.

“I dedicate this award to her because she is the reason why I play netball and she is my inspiration to join the New Zealand Silver Ferns team one day. I know if I practice and work hard, I will join their team one day.”

Meanwhile, the school’s top sportsman aims to join the national Fiji Football team.

Alivereti Vitoki, 14, of Dravuwalu Village in Kadavu, said: “I have a dream of being part of the Fiji Football team and I know one day I will.

“My family is against me playing soccer because everyone is a rugby fan, but I told them, no, I will play soccer.

“Thanks to my coach who has inspired me since Year 3, I have become so good and that has led me to this sportsman of the year award today.”
