FIFA Instructor Here To Develop Futsal

The FIFA/OFC Futsal course, an initiative to develop the sport in the country began at the Fiji Footbal Association Headquarters in Vatuwaqa, Suva yesterday.
Speaking to SUNsports, FIFA and OFC futsal instructor, Paul Toohey, confirmed that 20 participants are part of the week-long event.
“They are here to build their knowledge on futsal but also as part of the course we are looking at how to develop futsal in the country,” he said.
“There is a good tradition of futsal in Fiji but the participants especially the players and coaches want to take things to another level.
“They are dreaming about going to the FIFA futsal especially the world cup so we are hoping to sow the seeds so that it can flourish in the future and make that dream a reality.”
Toohey added that he was impressed with the participants as they are eager to learn.
“We will run through the theory and practical courses every day for the next five days but at the end of the course, the coaches will get back to their community and put it into practice.
“I’m impressed with the level of interests from some experienced players in the national team in the past and also young players who have a great passion for the game. We have some representatives from Fiji FA who are working with young people in different parts of the country.
It’s a very good mix of participants.
“The aim is to improve the level of coaches and also to develop futsal. Fiji can be more competitive internationally if we create more competitions and opportunities for players to play in.”
The course ends on Friday.
