Fiji Broadcasting Corporation (FBC) chief executive officer Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum is urging rugby fans to watch the Dubai 7s in high definition quality by purchasing a Walesi box. Walesi is Fiji’s digital television service which provides a platform that delivers high quality digital content. With the World Sevens Series to start on Friday, Sayed-Khaiyum said if rugby fans want to experience good picture and sound quality and get the best of the sevens tournament, a Walesi box can deliver that to them.

“We have nothing to do with Walesi but we are urging people and the fans of rugby sevens to get a Walesi box,” Sayed-Khaiyum said.

“The picture quality and the sound quality difference between analogue and digital television is immense and to be able to watch our boys win another tournament on digital television with excellent sound and picture quality will be absolutely amazing.

“I know for rugby fans it will cost a little bit more but that is something that is beyond our control and is set by the people who sell the Walesi box. If you want to have a new experience of watching sevens rugby in almost High Definition quality then please go out and get a box.”

With Fiji winning its first gold medal at the Rio Olympics and winning the Series twice in a row, those achievements have brought the country together and also attracted a lot more sponsors said Sayed-Khaiyum.

“As every Fijian rugby 7s crazy fan would know, we are doing this on the back of our Olympic gold medal win and the anticipation is extremely high this year. We hope to win the series again this season, we have won the gold medal and we can only get better from here. “There are two new players that have been introduced to the team, there is a new coach that will be taking up his job in a few months’ time so the anticipation is very high. Sevens is that particular sport in Fiji that glues us together as a nation and binds us together as one. It is a sport that does not differentiate between cultures, religion and communities, and it brings together people of all ages because we are sharing the same experience of cheering for our nation. It is the one sporting event that actually builds our patriotism and nationalism in this country and it is a wonderful thing to be associated with.

“This year we are seeing a record number of sponsors that have come on board for the new season of the World Series. Our major sponsors this year are Vodafone Fiji Limited, R.C Manubhai, associate sponsors are Total Fiji Limited, FMF Foods, CJ Patel and supporting sponsors are Apco Coatings and Ashabhai & Co and we are also currently talking to at least three sponsors who may be coming on board over the next few days’ right before the series kicks off.”

FBC TV will televise the men’s and women’s sevens tournament live.
