Police are again calling on the public not use their mobile phones while driving.

The caution comes following an incident where a woman who allegedly was making a phone call while driving veered off the road and landed in a drain at the Nadi Back Road yesterday.

The woman was driving a Hybrid vehicle.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said: “Drivers are once again advised to be more vigilant when using the road and practise simple and safe road safety rules during this festive season”

Junior Rafhan Ali, 17, a witness said: “The car went straight into the drain and I had to call two boys to come and help me get the woman out of the car.

Mr Ali said they tried pulling the woman out of the car with her leg stuck.

“We pulled her out, and another vehicle arrived, which I think was the husband, and he took her phone and keys and they drove to the hospital.”

In a separate incident a truck loaded with sugarcane tried to avoid an oncoming vehicle and ended up crashing in a compound at Waimalika in Nadi.

Home owner Joveci Naleba said no one was at home at the time of the incident.

“The CRV four wheel broke down in the middle of the road, so the semi-trailer tried to go pass but at the same time the truck was coming and he tried to avoid the oncoming vehicle,” he said.

“This led the truck to veer of the road and all the sugarcane came crashing into our compound.”
