Amanu Jules Simpson will represent Fiji in the 2016 Youth Sailing World Championships in New Zealand on December 14-20.

The 15-year-old’s family in Savusavu has organised a fundraising drive to fund his trip.

His mother, Pettine Simpson said the family was very proud of Amanu.

“He has been a consistent, enthusiastic, determined and committed young sailor who has managed to win local regattas and national competitions,” Pettine said.

“Representing our Young Sailors Club and coached by Roberta Lepper, Geoff Taylor and Naomi Waqalevu, Amanu has managed to win nationals and regattas here.

“He is a very keen sailor and aims of representing Fiji at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 in Japan.

“He has attended Emerging Nations Programmes for young sailors and is dedicated and committed to sailing.

“He has even turned down our plan to go back to Australia to complete his higher education in 2017 and has opted to stay and attend school here at Savusavu Secondary so he could continue sailing and his laser training here.

“It is already a proud moment for one of our young sailors to be representing Fiji in the 2016 Youth Sailing World Championships  and wouldn’t it be fantastic to have one of our young sailors from Savusavu represent Fiji in the next Olympic Games. We want to acknowledge our Savusavu family who have assisted with their development over the years.”

Amanu has been sailing since 2006.
