Conway Architects scooped the APCO Main Award at the Fiji Architects Association Awards night held at the Grand Pacific Hotel, Suva, on Friday night.

Company director Conway Beg said their win came as a surprise.

“I was really surprised that we won because there were a lot of good entries worthy of selection,” Mr Beg said.

He was thankful their project on Naisoso Island-House got recognition for their hard work.

The theme for the Awards night was “Beyond Tropical Cyclone Wi-Mr Beg thanked his staff at the in design studio.

He has been in the industry for 25 years.

Mr Beg said architects in Fiji don’t get the recognition they deserves and thanked the association for organising the event.

Fiji Architect Association president, Adish Naidu hopes that it becomes an annual event which also held its first symposium during the day.

The event has been revived after three years.

Chief guest, assistant Minister for infrastructure and transport Vijay Nath said the awards programme was an opportunity for public and peer recognition of architect work.

“It provides the association with a valuable mechanism to promote architects and architecture in Fiji and internationally,” said Mr Nath.

Mr Nath challenged the architects to explore designs and use of materials that will stand the test of element and time.

For 2013 Main Award Winner Design Hut, handing over the title was an emotional moment.

“I encourage young people to take up this career path,” Design Hut director, Sanjay Patel said.

Mr Patel has been in the industry for 23 years and his company has worked on major projects like the refurbishment of parliament, Albert Park Apartments, Mid-City, and currently the Ba Hospital.

The association has a membership of 32 architects, whereby 20 are active and working in 15 practices.

There are only two registered female architects.The awards had submissions from six practices.
