The Fijian Hockey teams are learning more from the Australian Country teams, says Fiji’s Hockey head coach Hector Smith.

The Australian Country men and women teams are in the country for the annual Hockey Challenge Series between the Australian teams and Fiji’s High Performance squads.

The Aussie teams are made up of Country representatives selected from all hockey states and are playing against the National Women’s HPU squad of 24 players – 18 of which will be selected each day for the Tai Trophy competition.

The men’s HPU fields two teams – Presidents XI and Fiji Warriors XI.

“We need to work on our communication level and we need to play better,” Smith said.

“The competition started on Saturday and younger players are benefitting since there are a lot of 18-year old students in the team.

“We would like to thank Australia Country or being part of development for hockey here, especially.

“In this year’s competition only one team from the Pacific was able to attend, Fiji Invitational Pacific Island.”

Meanwhile, the Australian Country women beat Fiji Warriors 3-0 while the Aussie men beat Fiji Warriors 4-0.

Competition continues this afternoon and the coaching clinic will be held for young hockey players.
