Discussions are underway to build a new Fiji Museum.

Fiji Museum director Adi Meretui Ratunabuabua said: “We recently had our consultation and we are looking at a question whether to build a new museum in the same location or we renovate this museum and continue with it.

“We need to discuss when our new board will be appointed by this month.

“We came up with the idea of building a new museum back in 1999. Back then, there was a competition with the public with the idea of how the museum would look. This did not happen because there was not funding then,” she said.

Adi Meretui said if they decided to build the new museum, it would be built in the same compound while the current Fiji Museum will remain.

“We will organise public consultations in January next year when we get the funding,” she said.

The Fiji Museum opened in 1955. They are currently renovating the front entrance and have extended the veranda. They will move their gift shop to another location next year.
