The Fiji Police Force is concerned with the lack of care shown by motorists after an alleged high speed car race from Lautoka to Ba ended tragically on Saturday.

“Reports of accidents are a clear indication that there are some who just do not care about their safety and that of others which is a major concern,” Fiji Police Director of Traffic Senior Superintendent Mahesh Mishra said.

“This needs to change if we are to avoid further loss of life and injury.”

24-year-old salesgirl Shylin Kumar succumbed to severe injuries sustained from the accident after being admitted at the Ba Hospital shortly after.

Ms Kumar, an employee of Jack’s Handicraft based at the Sheraton Fiji Resort, according to some eye witnesses, was travelling in a Toyota Fielder which was involved in a speed race with a Toyota Hybrid, both believed to be travelling to the same location in Ba.

According to the witnesses, the accident, at Varoko in Ba involved a third vehicle which allegedly hit the vehicle Ms Kumar was in and sent it tumbling into a drain.

The driver of the Hybrid, which was ahead of the two vehicles apparently lost control of his vehicle which resulted in the vehicle overturning and tumbling on the Kings Highway, on the approach to Nailaga Village.

Ms Kumar was removed from the vehicle and taken to hospital.

It is believed an occupant of the Hybrid vehicle was Ms Kumar’s fiancé.

The driver of the Fielder and Hybrid vehicles and a passenger in the latter vehicle were taken to hospital also and were being treated for their injuries.

SSP Mishra said as investigations continue into both cases, the Fiji Police Force were again pleading with motorists and pedestrians to be cautious and vigilant about their safety at all times.
