No Bail For Man Who Allegedly Injures Champ Race Horse

A man from Bua, Vanua Levu, charged with injuring an animal was denied bail yesterday by the Labasa Magistrates Court.

Kritesh Singh, 26, appeared before Magistrate Thushara Thennakoon.

It is alleged that Singh, at Vunivau in Bua last Friday, injured the legs of a winning race horse, which has resulted in the death of the animal.

Defence lawyer Kaiava Tadrau of Vakaloloma and Associates made a bail application, which was objected to by the Northern Divisional Police Prosecutor, Inspector Subramani Naidu.

Inspector Naidu told the court that Singh’s actions on the horse was inhumane.

He further elaborated that the horse, belonging to Mahendra Kumar, was to take part in the biggest horse race in Bua this month.

Inspector Naidu said the alleged incident had created lot of tension within some communities in Bua.

He said during the investigation process Singh had admitted to killing the animal, and the weapon he used was recovered.

Magistrate Thennakoon rejected the bail application.

Singh has been further remanded in custody.

The case has been adjourned for mention on December 9.
