Victoria Marine Shipping has confirmed the MV Brianna will be on charter to Matuku in Lau on December 23.

“The MV Brianna is chartered by the people of Makadru village in Matuku. The vessel will arrive on the island on December 24,” company shipping manager Pita Cokomata said.

He said they would leave for Suva soon after offloading and would pick the passengers after New Year.

Mr Cokomata said the vessel could carry a total of 260 passengers.

He said they were aware of the warning by the

Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) on overloading.

MSAF Chief Executive Officer, John Tunidau in a release said – “Overloading of passenger ships is an offence and is unsafe, and Ship owners/Operators/Masters who engage in this practice are liable to face criminal charges and administrative action in accordance with the Maritime Transport Decree, 2013. All ships must also ensure they have all the required Life Saving Equipment such as life jackets and life rafts and passengers and crew are made aware on how to access them during emergencies.

He said non-compliance with the Maritime Legislation could result in criminal prosecution, suspension or cancellation of master’s Certification of Competency, detention of the ship and up to $100,000 in fines.

According to Mr Cokomata they had advised the officials of Makadru village in Suva on MSAF’s overloading warning.
