Etuate Waqa Dies

The country last night is reeling with shock over the death of former double international and Vodafone Fijian 7s coach Etuate Waqa.

Waqa, 54, passed away yesterday, in Nadera after he suffered a heart attack.

His son France-based winger Sisa Waqa posted on Facebook: “Isa daddy I felt my heart broke when I received the phone about your sudden death this morning.

“We just talked last night. My words are not enough to express my deep hurt.”

Waqa was the first of the local rugby sevens stars who switched to rugby league in 1993 along with Noa Nadruku, Pauliasi Tabulutu, Alivereti Dere and Niko Baleiverata.

As a fifteens coach, Waqa took Northland from the B Division to the Major Union. He went on to coach Ovalau in the Skipper Cup competition. Waqa was Tonga’s sevens coach in the World Sevens Series.
