Former Vodafone Fijian Bati assistant coach Max Ninnes strongly feels local players should be given a fair chance to make the national team.

The Australian veteran who assisted head coach, Joe Rabele during the 2008 Rugby League World Cup in Sydney where they reached the Cup semi-final said that was achieved when they moulded the best combination. That is a mixture of local and NRL players.

Ninnes called on the Fiji National Rugby League to utilise local talents for next year’s Rugby League World Cup.

“I was hoping that FNRL do what we did in 2008 and that is give local players a go in the national team, not just to see the Australian clubs are picking these players.

“FNRL should not forget our local players in 2008 we had a lovely time, majority of our players were locals and they put up amazing performances.

“They got talented local players here in Fiji and they need to use them.”

Ninnes also stressed one area the Fijian team would need to watch out on is discipline.

“We have big forwards that will help to win a game but they will need to be careful on giving away penalties. They will need to be disciplined and that’s what they need to work on,” he added.

The former assistant coach was impressed with the development FNRL is doing in the country.
