PM Calls For Greater Scrutiny Of Investment Into Fiji
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has said that the Government needs to set higher standards when screening companies entering Fiji and get serious about fostering local investment and entrepreneurship.

Speaking to the Fiji Sun, Mr Bainimarama – who is in Brussels for talks with European Union officials – confirmed that he had not endorsed the Instacharge App that has drawn international scepticism.

But he had attended the event in Suva last week to encourage a local businessman, Gaurangbhai Patel, and inspire greater entrepreneurship on the part of young Fijians.

He said that while foreign investment and companies are welcome in Fiji, relevant trade and investment authorities need to exercise due diligence.

The Prime Minister’s comments follow a clarification issued by the Attorney-General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, that the PM had not endorsed the Instacharge App and that it had not been independently tested by Government.

The Attorney-General said that the app had not been sold by telecommunications providers and Fiji had adequate protection for consumers.
