Former Flying Fijians captain Deacon Manu supervises train

Former Flying Fijians captain Deacon Manu assisted the Fijiana XV team as they prepare for their first match of World Women World Cup  2017 qualifier tonight.

Team manager Divela Naucikidi said Manu spent a good time with the girls sharing his knowledge with the forwards.

“Manu visited the team training session on Wednesday and helped the forwards especially in the scrummaging.

“The weather is a little bit colder than yesterday but all is well,” Naucikidi said.

It was day off for the girls yesterday as they did their laundries and visited a few shopping malls.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong coach Jo Hull understands the challenge the Fijians will bring.

“We are definitely looking forward to playing against Fiji as it will be the first time we play them.

“We are pleased to be hosting this tournament.

“We have the domestic club season which is great and also an annual competition which is the Asian Rugby Championship, so we are lucky to be having a lot of tournaments.

“We know that Fiji will not be a walk in the park, they play a very physical game and are good in their offloads,” Hull said.

Jessica ‘lucky to be alive’

The 24-year-old scrumhalf plays her first game against Fiji today.

As she prepares to make her debut in the biggest match Hong Kong’s women have ever played in, Jessica Ho Wai-on admits she is lucky to be alive.

The 24-year-old fell roughly six metres from a bridge into moving water in Colombia when travelling 18 months ago, suffering a “whole array of injuries” that included breaking her collarbone and hand.

“I’m pretty lucky to be alive.

“I was out of rugby for about a year with injuries.”

Ho was never in any doubt that she would make it back on to the rugby field and is looking forward to seeing her months of hard work come to fruition against Fiji.

The game kicks off at midnight.
