The most common offences that the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption are charging people with are bribery and abuse of office.

FICAC’s public relations officer, Nandni Vandhana, revealed this during their campaign in Suva yesterday.

Ms Vandhana said FICAC was able to charge 50 people in 28 different cases this year. In the past two years the commission had been working on 100 per cent conviction rates in court for corruption-related offences, which was a highlight for the commission.

“As of present, we have 182 accused persons in court,” Ms Vandhana said.

FICAC held its final anti-corruption awareness campaign at urban centres around the Western, Central and Northern divisions yesterday.

Its complaints and awareness officers were on the campaign trail since December 1, to get people informed and help them identify corruption-related risks in their communities.

“We believe information is power.

“The more people have information, the more empowered they are, the more encouraged they are to report corruption, to identify corruption risks in their communities, to see what are the measures they can put in place to reduce corruption and also to actively say no to corruption,” Ms Vandhana said.

The event is held annually in conjunction with the International Anti- corruption Day celebration, and this year Ms Vandhana said they were able to attract a good number of people.

This year’s theme is enhancing national co-operation in combating corruption.

To report a complaint, the public can call 1322 from any network or email info@ficac.org.fj
