Fire Destroys Four Families’ Home

Four families are homeless after a fire destroyed their home at Davuilevu Housing yesterday.
Paulini Kawa, 25, said she was home with her two children when the incident happened.
They lived with three other families in a corrugated iron house.
The other families were not in their rooms at the time of the incident.
“My children and I were having breakfast and I had to go out to the washroom to change my baby’s diaper,” Mrs Kawa said.
“When I came back in, I saw the smoke coming from the next room where another family was staying in and they have left for work.”
“I ran outside and filled a basin of water thinking it might stop the fire but it was spreading really fast,” she said.
The house was destroyed. Firefighters managed to save two neighbouring homes from catching fire although one was partially burnt.
The family has lived there for more than seven years. The National Fire Authority is investigating the cause of the fire.
