A 38-year-old man appeared in the Suva Magistrates Court yesterday charged with the murder of his partner, seven years later.

Imshad Izraal Ali is alleged to have murdered his partner at his home in Howell Road, Suva. The alleged incident took place some time in 2009.

The case was dismissed because of the inability to execute a long standing search warrant since Ali had absconded overseas.

Defence lawyer Patrick Kumar told the court that Ali was away overseas for medical treatment because he was suffering from kidney dis-function.

Ali had absconded overseas having being given leave from court to obtain medical treatment.

Magistrate Makereta told Mr Kumar to file a formal bail application attached with Ali’s medical certificate.

Through a partnership between the Indian government and authorities, as well as INTERPOL, Ali was arrested and escorted back to Suva by a senior officer of the Fiji Police Force and recharged with one count of murder.

Police Prosecutor Apenisa Keresoni told the court that he had yet to serve full phase disclosures, but would be objecting to bail.

Magistrate Mua has further remanded Ali.

The case has been adjourned to December 15 for a formal bail application.
