The University of Fiji announced the completion of its Medical School at Kula Street, Samabula, Suva yesterday.

It is part of a $4.5 million upgrade of it’s Suva campus.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Prem Misir, said they were proud that the University was giving people, who could not otherwise afford tertiary studies, a chance to further their education.

“This University is doing a tremendous amount of work for the western division of Fiji.

“It has the lowest fees and attracts children of ordinary people to study at a University,” he said.

Professor Misir said they aimed to get 125 students enrolled in the MBBS programme, in both Saweni and Suva Campus, next year.

The Dean of the Umanand Prasad School, Dr Abhijit Gogoi, said this new structure was the school’s second branch, which would start its classes from February 13 next year.

He said they had planned to start with a small number and then increase the intake.

“We will start with 25 to 30 local students first,” he said.

Dr. Gogoi said the need for this development was because of the demand of doctors within Fiji and the Pacific.

“We are even getting applications from students from Solomon Islands, PNG and Micronesia,” he said.

He said the university would be collaborating with hospitals in Suva for student internship purposes.
