Nauru won the Australia Football League (AFL) Oceania Under-15 final after defeating Fiji 27-21 at Albert Park, Suva yesterday.

Both sides started off well but the visitors proved themselves too strong as they were able to utilised every opportunities lost by the Fijians which awarded them the win.

Fijian coach Maciu Raida was proud of the achievement.

“The boys played their best. We lost by six points so this is a good learning experience,” he said.

“It was just silly mistakes which cost us today. The boys lost focus and gave away chances which was utilised well by Nauru.”

Raida also acknowledged parents and friends who turned up in numbers to support the players.

“It was good to see the public gaining interest towards the sport and turning up here in numbers to support the players which was good to see,” he added.

Nauru coach Zac Temaki was impressed with the win.

“We know Fiji will be tough but I thank our players for giving their best performance and winning the tournament. They played to our game plan and I’m proud of them,” Temaki added.
