Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa congratulated their two winners of the Fiji Airways cocktail competition held late last month.

Oswald Chambers was awarded the winner of the Pre-flight Welcome Mocktail and Vili Magitilailai as winner of the Signature Cocktail.

In recognition of this win, the duo will have their drinks served on Fiji Airways flights for 2017.

32-year-old Oswald Chambers has been working at the Sofitel for 11 years and rose from a waiter to bar manager.

“I am very proud because I won the Fiji Airways welcome drink for all the flights. It’s a privilege for me,” he said.

“This is the first time for me to achieve anything as such.

“The Mocktail that I made is something based on Fijian lifestyle because I want people on-board Fiji Airways to think and remember Fiji at all times.”

Mocktail named Fijian Punch that won is made from Fijian fresh lime, mint leaves and also fresh orange with a little bit of lime syrup.

“This mocktail is for people who don’t drink alcohol,” Mr  Chambers said.

Mr Chambers hails from Nadroga.

His colleague, Viliame Magitilailai, 30, hails from Levuka on Ovalau and has been part of Sofitel since 2007.

He was pure science student at St John’s College but things changed as he returned to his village to give back to his single mother.

“Had to give back something to my mom so I came out of the village to earn for my living,” he said.

“My work has become my passion and I love working at the bar,” he said.

Last year, he finished as first runner up for the cocktail competitions held at Rhum-Ba.

“The name of the cocktail is Paradise, because we are lucky as a Fijian to be living in a country with a lot beautiful things here including the big Bula smile.”

In the drink

Fiji Rum from Paradise Beverage 30 ml, 30 ml of Fiji coconut rum as well with freshly squeezed lime, 20 ml and just a dash of ginger.

“When it was announced that Paradise won, I just sat there thinking that all my sacrifices and hard work for so many years behind the bar paid well.”

“This is not the end of the road. I keep on working hard there might be something better than this I will achieve.

Director of Food & Beverage Cameron Griffiths said: “Both gentlemen delivered easy to prepare, flavoursome drinks that captured the tastes and feeling of Fiji.

“It is such an honour for them, the team, Waitui Beach Club and Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa to have such high calibre professionals creating for our guests.”
