In a major upset New Zealand beat Australia 57-51 in the FIBA Under-18 Oceania Championship men’s final at the Vodafone Arena, Suva last night.

The Kiwis took out the gold and qualified for the 2017 FIBA U19 World Championship.

They are joined by the Australian women’s team who thrashed New Zealand 107-52 in the final.

The Aussies played to their strength and dominated most phases of the game as they led 49-20 at half time.

The women in gold lifted their intensity in the final two quarters to return home with the top prize.

Aussie captain Chantel– Anais Horvat said her girls put up a good fight.

“It was a great game, New Zealand put up a tough fight  but we managed to fight and get the win in the end.

“These girls are very talented,” Horvat said.

The Australians return home today and will regroup for the World Championship in July.

“We are going to go back and do our own training, and hopefully by July a lot of us will make this team again because there will be another trial,” she added.

Meanwhile, Samoa women defeated New Caledonia 75-65 to finish in third place.
