Police: Help us make our roads safer

It seems people continue to ignore traffic rules despite the many warnings and campaigns issued by the authorities.

In the past 48 hours, the Fiji Police Force has arrested at least five people for drunk driving offences, according to a Police statement.

Two cases were recorded in the Southern Division, two in the Eastern and one from the West.

In custody is a 69-year-old who was arrested along Rewa Street, Samabula, a 23-year-old who was arrested along Nokonoko Road, a 48-year-old who was arrested along Princes Road, Waila, and 45-year-old who was arrested along the Kings Road, Rewa Bridge and a 39-year-old who was arrested in Martintar, Nadi.

“As we enter a busy period of the year, the Fiji Police Force is hoping there will be no further loss of lives on our roads,” Police said in the statement.

“And if we continue to record arrests for drunk and drive, which is one of the major causes of road deaths, then it is clear that there are still certain individuals who think they are either immune to the long arm of the law or are just being selfish, and not considering the dangers they are putting on themselves and others when they get behind the wheel drunk.”

The recent traffic infringement records for 2016 had more than 26,000 drivers booked for speeding alone.

“The festive season is upon us, and we will continue to push out the awareness, however your safety and the safety of your loved ones and other road users will ultimately be up to you to maintain,” Police said.

The current road death toll stands at 52 compared to 61 for the same period.
