The University of South Pacific was the centre for Christmas hype and music as First Fruits Chorale group for the first time hosted a concert at a lecture theatre.

Among the thirty performers was seven-year-old Nioka Downey, who stole the show with her musical talent on the violin and piano.

“I love music and classical music is my favourite,” Nioka said.

She has been studying piano and violin for the past year in Sydney, Australia.

This year in May, she won the Most Promising Pianist 9 Years and Under Award at her local Eisteddfod and first prize in her violin class.

“I was only five-years-old when I developed passion for music.”

At four-years-old she started playing piano and violin.

“I was so happy when I heard that First Fruits Chorale will be having a Christmas concert and I would perform,” she said.

“My family have always been supporting me.”

Her mother Maggie Downey said: “My daughter Nioka has an ear for music. It is a gift from God which is unexplainable.

“She hears things and she can play that same tune on violin and piano.

Two years ago, the family moved to Australia where she was able to get a scholarship to harness her passion for music.

First Fruits Chorale’s Joy to the World Christmas concert organiser Grace Versoni said: “I only took three sessions with Nioka and I discovered that she is a very good pianist and violinist.

“When I was planning for this concert, I thought of Nioka to be part of our Christmas concert.”

Ms Verson added: “We have been preparing for this concert for the past two months.
