Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Mereseini Vuniwaqa has applauded the commitment of the Dudley Women’s Fellowship for recognising and giving our senior citizens the respect they deserve.

The Dudley Women’s Fellowship on Saturday organised a Christmas dinner and celebration for the senior citizens day.

“The celebration is an opportunity to highlight the important contributions that the older people make to our society and raise awareness on the issues and challenges of ageing in today’s world,” she said.

Ms Vuniwaqa emphasised the need to teach children the value of older persons, to love and respect them.

“If we don’t, tomorrow we will be asking the same questions that many of our senior citizens are asking today. It’s up to us to make a difference,” she said.

“I want to thank you for your years of hard work, years of sacrifice, years of love, years of experience, years of smiles, years of nurturing a generation of leaders in various facets of Fijian society.”

Every year the Dudley Women’s Fellowship gives out gifts and appreciation certificates to 70 senior citizens within the church and a few invites from other religious groups.

Shukla Robert, the Women’s Fellowship Treasurer, said the church had been supportive and it was a million blessings for them.

Sajjana Nand, 64, said: “I feel so special and loved because today I realised that we are still important.”
