Shakirah Saifuddeen Sam, wearing her hijab and jilbab, happily celebrated Prophet Muhammed’s birthday at the FMF National Gymnasium yesterday with her friends.

The 14-year-old came from Papua New Guinea in 2014 to study more about Islam.

She said she greatly misses her family, whom she last visited in December last year.

“My parents wanted me to come here to study about Islam,” she said.

“In PNG, we do not have many Muslims in the city where I live and there are no Islamic studies there.”

She has three younger sisters and a younger brother who live with her parents in Papua New Guinea.

When asked if she will be visiting her family again this year, she said she was not sure and it depended on her father.

“I like staying in Fiji, it is really good, but I miss home.

“In the morning I wake up, go to school and study about Islamic principles and normal school subjects,” she said.

The Year 7 students says she is still not sure what she would like to become in the future, but hopes to make her parents proud by achieving excellence in her studies.

She said she will graduate next year and will await a decision of her parents regarding her next move for her future.
