Faith can be a powerful, ever-present force in our lives. And it is incumbent on us all to use faith as a tool to guide our thoughts and actions so that we can make a positive impact on those around us.

These remarks were made by the President, Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote, during the celebration of Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva yesterday.

He said the great strength of Fijian society is our diversity.

“We all come from a wide range of cultural, ethnic and religious backgrounds, but it is due to those differences that we gain perspective and discover the common values that form our shared identity.

“Faith is about far more than prayers or incantations.

“When we live our lives through faith, and practice the virtues ingrained in our religions, we leave the world a better place than we found it, and we inspire others to do the same,” Mr Konrote said.

He said the Fiji Muslim League in particular has helped Fiji make significant strides in educating people through their commitment to continuous education.

“Since their establishment in 1926, they have expanded to 26 branches throughout Fiji, which have established 17 primary schools and five colleges.

“Those schools have served Fijians from many faiths, ethnicities and cultural backgrounds,” Mr Konrote said.

Fiji Muslim League national president, Hafizud Dean Khan said Fiji is one of the few countries in the world that has equal status and treatment for all religions.

“Fiji should remain a very special country where everybody of all different religions has equal rights as the citizens of this country,” Mr Khan said.

Delegates also came from overseas to take part in the celebration.
