STATEMENT FROM THE MINISTRY OF NATIONAL DISASTER MANAGEMENT

The National Disaster Controller and Permanent Secretary for National Disaster Management, Mr. Meleti Bainimarama, has advised the public to take extreme caution and regularly check for updates on Tropical Disturbance 04f, which is expected to bring heavy rain and is likely develop into a Tropical Depression over the next 48 hours.
“At the moment, there is also a 25-50% chance that a cyclone could form in Fijian waters, and the National Disaster Management Office is closely monitoring the situation. All members of the public should exercise caution and remain alert at all times,” he said.
Mr. Bainimarama urged parents to closely monitor the whereabouts of children and keep them away flooded drains or waterways. He also advised that nighttime movements be limited as much as possible.
“Those Fijians living in flood prone and low-lying areas should be watchful of the tides and of any possible flooding due to heavy rains. Compounds should be cleared of all debris and tree tops should be trimmed as a precautionary measure,” he said. “Mariners are advised to adhere to the wind warnings and refrain from traveling in small boats on the open sea.”
Mr. Bainimarama assured that disaster response personnel are prepared to respond in the event of severe flooding or other effects caused by the Tropical Disturbance.
