Basketball Fiji is taking a holistic approach in the development of the national teams after the Oceania Under-18 Championship was completed in Suva last Saturday.

Basketball Fiji chief operating officer Lai Puamau said yesterday the tournament provided a learning curve for the local coaches and managers when it comes to participating in international tournaments.

“The championship was definitely a success for Fiji and it gave our coaches and managers a first-hand experience of what the international arena is all about,” Puamau said.

“When it comes to development, we do not only focus on the players, we want to take a holistic approach and develop the coaches and managers which is the forefront of any team.

“The lessons learnt from this tournament will help our coaches and managers in the long run and especially in developing the sport at grass root or club level.

“We believe that they can do better and now the lessons gained during the one-week tournament will give them an insight into other professional teams and how they play.

“And also it gauges where we stand and what we need to do to improve in order to be competitive in such tournaments. Now the coaches can go back and practice what they have learnt and build-up our teams.”

Puamau said not only are the coaches and managers getting experienced, but also the players and said the tournament has shown what Fiji is very much capable of hosting.

“The players have improved as well, we can see that they were a totally different team by the end of the tournament.

“They had a shakey start but did well towards the end and that in itself is something positive and what we are happy about.

“So all parties benefitted from the championship and I know when another tournament comes around we will be ready.”
