Let Common Sense Prevail

Former Vodafone Fijian 7s head coach Ben Ryan continuous attack on the Fiji Rugby Union has gone viral on social media. Here are two of his latest tweets:

What triggered the whole incident was when Ryan called on FRU to pay the current sevens team by contracting them.

The FRU in their reply made it clear that the employment contracts of the sevens’ players had expired after the Rio Olympic Games.

However, for the current players- mostly from Ryan’s extended squad- have been paid their relevant allowances while in camp and also while on tour for the Dubai and Cape Town tournaments.

The FRU also made it clear that once newly appointed coach Gareth Baber starts on January 2, next year, he will select his team and they will work on contracting the players.

As we value Ryan’s concern for the players we at the same time should also appreciate the hard work done at Rugby House in their mission to move the sport towards professionalism.

This big work is done despite the limited resources we have.

Last Saturday’s FRU Special General Meeting resulted in many positives as the board of directors and the Union executives deliberated on the way forward.

They looked at the current structure and unanimously agreed for reforms to take place.

This is a big step forward for Fiji Rugby as for the first time they have taken on the challenge to take this path where transparency and accountability are championed. There’s no turning back.

For now we must allow common sense to prevail.

No one denies the fact that Ryan has done our country proud at the Olympics and has also decided to leave us after that.

We’ve respected his decision and let him be. With Fiji at heart, he has again made his point known in which FRU has rightfully responded to it and for now it is best to be left at that.
