Fifty-five-year-old Jiuta Daucina, of Nawaca Village, in Bua walked with his head held high to receive his certificate from the Minister for Education, Mahendra Reddy.

Mr Daucina was among other graduates who gathered yesterday at the Technical College of Fiji short course certificate presentation at their Vanua Levu Arya Campus in Naduna.

The dalo farmer said the one-week training he attended on carpentry would serve his family well.

“I have wanted to build a house for some time but the carpenter had just squared it and left.

“After the training at Ratu Epeli Ravoka Technical College I have started works on the house and now it is going fine,” Mr Daucina said.

The father of seven said the provision of a technical college as such has opened opportunities for them, especially the older generation.

Mr Daucina said he dropped out of school at Class Six.

“At that time education was different. For instance, once you leave school or miss a level it was hard for you to go back,” he said.

“Before, the saying ‘education has no limits’ with Fiji was only applicable to life lessons and not so much about formal education.

“Today, I am 55 and I got my first tertiary qualification, this was not possible before.”

Mr Reddy, as chief guest, said: “There is no end to knowledge, no barrier to knowledge at these Technical Colleges.

“We do not ask for your marks, your religious beliefs and your ethnicity or how old you are.

“There is only one requirement and that is for you to be passionate about the course that you enrol in.”
