The Permanent Secretary for National Disaster Management, Meleti Bainimarama, is calling on the public to be wary of the inclement weather.

“The approaching tropical depression will bring more rain so we are advising the public to move when it’s daylight, and to cut down the movement at night. If families have festivity plans in the weekend, please defer it to when the weather gets better,” he advised.

Mr Bainimarama also advised parents to keep watch over their children.

He revealed food packs and formulas were sent to divisional commissioners two weeks ago from the National Disaster Management Office.

“If the evacuation centres will be occupied tonight (last night), then hopefully the public come with dry clothes and their rations for the first few hours, but certainly from tomorrow (today) the rations will be distributed,” he said.

Mr Bainimarama also confirmed that people living in tents and low lying areas have been told to move to evacuation centres, which are now open.
