A father from the Cakaudrove province was yesterday sentenced by the High Court in Labasa to 16 years imprisonment for raping his daughter.

The father, who had pleaded guilty to all counts, will have to spend 15 years in jail before he can be eligible for parole.

The accused was 48 at the time of the incident and the victim was 20.

The man who appeared before Justice Salesi Temo was faced with seven charges.

The first count was assault with intent to commit rape and six counts of rape.

The court heard that the man repeatedly raped his daughter six times while she was under his care from the 11th to the 16th of June 2015.

The matter was reported to the Savusavu Police station after the accused was caught in the act by a member of the public on the 16th of June.

While making submissions, state prosecutor Amelia Vavadakua said the victim feared for her life as the accused was far stronger than she was.

He had carnal knowledge without her consent.

Justice Temo said a father daughter relationship was a precious one and fathers should be the pillar of strength for their daughters, guiding them to become useful members of society.

The man was given 30 days to appeal.
