Man Remanded For Alleged Rape, Theft

A 20-year-old man was remanded in custody by the High Court in Labasa yesterday.

Tabaiwalu John Pickering charged with one count each of rape and theft appeared before Justice Salesi Temo.

The alleged incident occurred on Thursday last week after a nightclub outing. The court heard that the complainant and the accused were Facebook friends and had met outside a nightclub in Labasa.

State Prosecutor Lisiate Fotofili explained the complainant said she was on her way home when the accused offered to walk with her.

Mr Fotofili said the two parted ways at a point and sometime later the complainant realised she was being followed by the accused.

He said the complainant testified that she was pushed to the ground and had her clothes forcefully removed by Pickering before he allegedly raped her.

Mr Fotofili said the accused had suffered injuries to her arms and legs in the alleged incident which is said to have occurred around 1:30am to 2:00am.

Justice Temo said pending bail applications, the accused would be held in custody and would appear at the High Court in Labasa on January 26 next year.
