Veteran bowler Doreen O’Connor heaped praise on the sponsor Islands Electric after all 32 bowlers received a prize for participating.

The tournament was held over two weeks at the Lautoka Bowling Club and the pairs’ team had to be made up of an experienced player and a person who virtually had not played bowls before.

“This has never happened before in bowling,” O’Connor said after she won the Islands Electric Two Persons Bowls Tournament with Crystal Vadigi.

O’Connor said while she was surprised at the quality of the prizes, she was happy that this tournament had encouraged more people to take up bowling as a sport.

The prizes ranged from two burner gas stoves, electric frying pans, cake mixers, slow cookers and more appliances.

“I have been bowling for more than 18 years now and this is the first tournament where everyone received a prize,” O’Connor, who has represented Fiji on many occasions, said.

Island Electric managing director Raymond Singh, an ardent golfing enthusiast, said he wanted everyone to be a winner.

“This also encourages new players to join and inject a new lease of life so that players look forward to tournaments,”Singh said.

“It also helps in improving your game because you know you have good prizes at stake.”

In the semifinal, the O’Connor/Vadigi combination accounted for Permal Satya and Pawan Sundressan 10-3 while the Singh/James Krishna team defeated Satya Sundressan and Kaushik 10-5.

In the final, Singh was replaced by golfer Roneel Prakash and along with Krishna were outdone by O’Connor and Vadigi 10-2.
