About 20 families took shelter at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) in Calia, Navua on Thursday.

The area was not yet flooded but they do not want to take any risk.

Evacuee Kositino Waqanisanini said: “We took heed of warnings given by the Nadi Weather Office and prepared ourselves in advance.

“When flood warnings were issued to people living in the low-lying areas, we moved our belongings to higher grounds and came to the evacuation centre.”

Mr Waqanisanini said they started evacuating around noon on Thursday.

Mr Waqanisanini said people who have taken shelters there have been informed by the Police and Social Welfare Department to stay there until the flood warning was cancelled.

Some people have also taken shelter at the Vashist Muni Primary School in Navua town.
