As if Tropical Cyclone Winston had not done enough, Joape Nabure suffered another blow two weeks ago when his home tent was blown away by a strong gust of wind.

He and his wife Evelini Viti Temo now live in a make-shift shelter, built atop the flooring of where his original house once stood. The couple had a sleepless night on Wednesday as a result of rain entering through gaps between the corrugated irons that made up their temporary shelter.

Mr Nabure had moved to his village at Drauniivi, Ra in 2010 after retiring from Tropic Woods Industries in Lautoka.

He was happy to have finally settled down and build a home on his land.

Tropical Cyclone Winston ruined his retirement when it left him with only the flooring for his home.

All his electrical appliances, television, gas stove and washing machine were all destroyed during the cyclone in February.

Mr Nabure was fortunate enough to receive $7000 from the Government’s housing initiative and was able to purchase timbers and roofing iron.

Unfortunately, since the initiative he has been struggling to purchase cement and blocks to rebuild his house, but the shortage of the items has made things difficult.

Mr Nabure and son, Vetaia Biraki collected old roofing irons that had been blown away during Tropical Cyclone Winston.

His son had to shift to his maternal grandmother because there was lack of space in their make-shift home.

However, Mr Nabure said if there are any signs of strong winds occurring, he and wife would find shelter at a nearby school or village.
