Temple Loses Almost $120k In Fire

The Wairuku Kutti Temple in Rakiraki says it has lost close to $120,000 in damages after a fire burnt the temple on Tuesday.

This was confirmed by the temple President, Nitya Nadan Goundar on Thursday.

Mr Goundar, who is currently employed with Punjas Fiji as a Sales Merchandiser, believes the fire started around 5am.

“I was at home when the vice president called at 6.30am and said the temple was on fire,” he said.

He said when he arrived, the fire fighters had already distinguished the fire and all was cleared by 7am.

Mr Goundar added that according to Police, the fire may have started from the kitchen as a result of an electrical fault.

He said they had lost new electrical appliances including a jug, rice cooker, gas stove and a newly built cabinet.

He said he has been the president of the temple for the past 12 years and this is a very sad time for the people of his community.

“It’s a very painful feeling knowing we are coming close to the festive season and this has happened to our temple.”

Mr Goundar said, Police had confirmed that once the temple is cleared, fundraising for renovations may proceed.

A temporary shed will be built to continue with temple prayers.

Police spokesperson, Ana Naisoro, confirmed the incident and said they were waiting for the National Fire Authority (NFA), to send a report.

Mr Kumar has been forwarded the details of the incident and he said he will respond when notified.
