Usamate Examines Philippines Overseas Work Programme

The Minister for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations Jone Usamate recently discussed experiences in the deployment of workers overseas with the Philippines Overseas Employment Administration in Manila, Philippines.
Minister Usamate is leading a government delegation which is undertaking a study tour this week as a learning comparison with the Fiji’s National Employment Centre’s seasonal work programme.
“It is an opportunity to learn about the Philippine Labour Migration System given that Philippines sends approximately 1.8 million workers overseas annually and recently earned $33.50 billion ($USD16billion) in remittances in 2015,” said Mr Usamate.
The delegation also learnt about Philippine’s employment facilitation and accreditation of employers, licensing and adjudication system and held an informational session with the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration.
The information shared by the Philippines administration will allow for useful comparisons with Fiji’s existing systems in the National Employment Centre and other areas that can be examined.
Minister Usamate is accompanied by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary Salaseini Daunabuna, Deputy Secretary Vilimone Baledrokadroka and Fiji’s Ambassador to Japan Isikeli Mataitoga.
