Goundar Shipping owner, George Goundar, said yesterday their services had been delayed because of adverse weather.

He also explained that when the seas were rough they did not cook food on board.

He was responding to complaints from some passengers about the delay of his ship, Lomaiviti Princess 1 leaving Kadavu and Port Mua-i-Walu, Walu Bay.

“We also announced in the radio that the Kadavu trip was going to be delayed because of the weather.

“Their safety should be their most concern,” Mr Goundar said.

Some passengers, who arrived in Suva onboard the Lomaiviti Princess 1 from Kadavu yesterday, raised concerns about the delay.

The ship was supposed to arrive on Friday night but took shelter in Kavala because of rough seas and departed yesterday.

Joji Uluiviti, a passenger, said apart from not being told of the delay, there was also no food sold in the vessel.

Similar sentiments were voiced by family members who were waiting at Port Mua-i-Walu to travel to Vanua Levu.

Christina Masioliva, 34, said she was waiting from 9pm to 12 midnight Friday before they were informed that their trip to Vanua Levu had been cancelled.

The ship was to leave at 10pm.

“I did not know that the trip was cancelled and I was waiting with my four children and a nephew along with my husband in the cold.

“I was really frustrated because we wasted a lot of money for transportation and having to buy food.”
