Utility player Penioni Dakai scooped the Player of 2016 during the Roosters Nailaga Rugby Club inaugural awards night in Ba on Friday.

The 25-year-old is optimistic of improving his skills as he work towards wearing the Flying Fijians jumper and later secure a contract overseas.

“I’m honoured to receive the award and being the first recipient of it too,” Dakai said.

According to NRC officials, Dakai performed well throughout the season. Dakai plays at No.8 but when the need arises, he takes up the fullback position as well.

“I have been playing for Nailaga since I was a Year 11 student at Ba Methodist High School. I’ve never looked back as I have this passion for rugby. I’m grateful for the support from home and the club.”

Dakai hails from Taviya, in Ovalau and has been named in the Ba Rugby Union side for next year’s Vodafone Trophy (B Division) competition.

“I have been in the team for three years in- a- row. I just have to work harder to achieve more success.”

Tui Ba, Adi Laite Koroirua who had officiated at the event praised the players for another successful season.

“I’m proud of the achievement made by the team this season to win shield once again,” Adi Laite said.

“I hope that the team will continue on next year. I pray that unity be the stronghold of this team.”

She also thanked sponsors Billmoria and Rooster Poultry for showing their support this season.
