Cricket Fiji’s (CF) development programme has involved 33,000 students this year.

CF development officer Joe Rika is grateful they have been consistently hitting the 30,000 mark.

‘We have a set of Key Performance Indicators (KPI) in each of our units,” Rika said.

“With regards to our development programmes we are required to do 20 per cent better than the previous year and that is exactly what we have done.

“This has led to our biggest primary school competition where 60 teams took part from around Viti Levu and we are growing.

“This eventually leads to the growth of the sport and we are slowly getting there but we are pleased with our development programmes.

“At the rate we are going, we could hopefully have cricket be up there in the four to five years.

“It is not only about development but getting the right people involved financially in order to grow the sport.

“It has been one of the best years that we have had, we took part in our first world cup which was a big step for us and a learning curve.”

2017 will be another year for Cricket Fiji to shine as the first international outing will be in February in Bendigo, Melbourne, Australia followed by the school competition which is set to kick off next month.

“We are lucky to have international matches as it helps in developing our players, so currently the national men’s team is preparing for the East Asia Pacific Men’s Competition in Australia,” he said.

“So 2017 will be an exciting year for us, we also kick starting our schools competition, we did not have it this year because of cyclone Winston so we will resume with that next year.

“We are anticipating another successful year for Cricket Fiji.”
