Family of 11 evacuates after Waibula River burst its bank early hours of yesterday morning.

Pastor Peni Morivatu, 59, and his wife Timaima Usumaki, 57, with their children of Deepwater Road, Korovou moved to Korovou Primary School to take shelter as the water level in the Waibula River rose and filled their home.

“We did not know what to do and where to go to for help so we quickly gathered everything we could and moved to the Korovou Primary School for shelter.

“Our compound had nearly three feet of flood water.

“The water started to rise around 2 am this morning while my children and I were still awake trying to collect everything together.

“Suddenly I saw the water getting into my house and I told my kids to move to the school right away,” Ms Usumaki said.

Mr Morivatu said the first thing he did was to get his children, pig and piglets across to the school.

“I have eight piglets and the mother pig that I have to move them to the school while my children packed their necessary items.

“Then I helped my children to move across to the school and stay safe while we faced heavy rain and flood,” Mr Morivatu said.

He said his families are in fear for the future tropical cyclones that might affect them and their home. “We are in fear since last night and none of us could sleep as we just thought of our home and our livelihood.”
