An unexpected landslide has left a father wondering if his plans to organise his only daughter’s wedding will go ahead as scheduled.

Like every father, Shekhar Prasad, 44, also dreamt to celebrate his daughter’s Ashwini Prakash wedding in a grand way on January 20 and 21.

“I was so happy about my daughter’s wedding and I had planned so many things for it.

“We have sent the invitation to all our relatives and done the wedding shopping,” Mr Prasad said.

The house in which the Prasad family has lived in for 25 years sustained damage following a massive landslide on Saturday night, after recent continuous rainfall in Veisari.

Mr Prasad said this landslide has shattered all his dreams of seeing her only daughter getting married.

“My daughter was very happy about her wedding and she also had made plans.

“I have been residing with my family in Veisari for the last 25 years and this was the first time we have experienced the landslide,” he said.

Mr Prasad said he was thankful to God that his family members were  not at home during the time of the incident.

The family experienced three landslides- the worst one which damaged the house was on Saturday night.

“The first landslide happened on Friday night but it was only a small portion. But, we were safe.

“On Saturday morning, another landslide happened and we are lucky to escape the landslide the second time,” he said.

Mr Prasad said on Saturday afternoon when he returned home from shopping with his family members, the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) officials told us to vacate our house as there was chances that more soil from underneath the house would displace.

“We left our house around 7:30 pm on Saturday and we went to stay at our relative’s home in Sawani, Nausori.

“This morning (yesterday morning), my friend called to inform me about the massive landslide that happened beside my house.

“I became very worried but at the same time, was thankful that we were not at home during the third landslide,” he said.

And, the focus for the family now has shifted from wedding preparations to having a safe home for them.

The family intends to leave the house they called home for 25 years and settle elsewhere.

Any marriage plans will have to be made after the family decides whether it could be hosted from their residence.

“I am really disturbed after this incident,” he said.

Mr Prasad said he will now make some arrangements for his daughter’s wedding elsewhere.

“We have informed our daughter’s fiancé’s family and they have told us to postpone the wedding for some time.

“They have been very understanding but for us, it has been about celebrating a very important rite of passage in a grand way- which will no longer be possible now.”

He said hosting the wedding from another venue will not have the same emotional bond, as his daughter had many memories attached to their home.

The family hopes things will work out for them, for the better.

Meanwhile a  family is living in fear after a second landslide with all the debris was dumped metres away from their home.

The first landslide happened last Thursday night close to the Chauhan Memorial Primary School where the family resides in Veisari outside Lami Town.

The second landslide happened on Saturday night.

Resident Malingni  Rokosuka said: “I am so scared after the two landslides.

“I am so thankful to God that my family is safe.

Ms Rokosuka has been residing in Veisari for the last 37 years. After her husband’s death last year, she is now residing with her two children and a granddaughter.
