Two people were taken from Qamea Island yesterday and admitted at the Labasa Hospital.

Pio Tikomaiositerelia, 18, and Tuicolo Moceiseaqaqa, 32, got injured during the flash flooding last Sunday.

Pio of Kocoma Village had his right pinky finger operated.

Mr Moceiseaqaqa of Togo Village, had numerous cuts on his hands and legs and was unable to walk. He was taken to the operation theatre for wound cleaning last night.

Pio, a Year 12 student of Niusawa Methodist School said he was worried about how he would go back to school.

“I was carrying cement blocks to my house under the heavy rain when I suddenly slipped and injured my little finger,” Pio said at the men’s surgical ward.

“I don’t know how I will write.”

He said he was worried about his family’s safety back on the island.

Meanwhile, Mr Moceiseaqaqa’s brother-in-law, Lepani Vanigi, said it was an unfortunate incident.

“He was digging the drain near his house when a huge flow of flood water came behind him and pushed him away, damaging his kitchen,” Mr Vanigi said.

“Unfortunately, his house got destroyed and he got injured.

“His three children and my sister are currently staying at a relative’s house.”

It is understood that there are still a few people with minor injuries but they have been treated by medical staff on the island.

Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro confirmed last night that as of yesterday there had not been any report of death from the Northern Division.
